More than 36,000 people aged between 40 and 69 participated.


A hidden relationship between diet and diabetes


The story began when scientists wanted to monitor the effect of soft drinks on the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

It turns out that diet drinks, long considered a healthy option, may be more harmful than we think.

While drinks sweetened with regular sugar were associated with a 23% increased risk,

The surprise came from diet drinks, which raised this risk to 38%.


Diet is more dangerous than sugar?

While many believe that cutting calories means better health, the findings show that the artificial sweeteners used in these drinks may directly impact metabolism, not just weight gain. Researchers confirmed that the link between these drinks and diabetes remained even after excluding obesity, reinforcing the hypothesis that dieting itself carries its own risks.


Call to review health policies

Accordingly, scientists have warned against underestimating the risks of diet drinks, calling for a rethink of health policies related to them. They also stressed the need to impose taxes and regulations not only on sugar-sweetened beverages but also those containing artificial substitutes, in order to protect public health from a silent threat lurking under the banner of "no sugar."
